AI Art Generator

AI Art has surged in popularity because of the ease of generating art.

Anyone with no experience can generate art from their imagination.

With AI, all you need to provide is a description of the kind of art that you want to generate.

Next, the AI will take a moment to generate the art based on your prompts.

AI-generated art has been controversial because it discredits the work of real artists.

In this guide, you’ll learn what is AI art and the best AI art generators from a text or an image that you can use for free.

What is AI art?

AI art is AI-generated art based on text, images, or other references.

Most AI generators are text-to-image systems, which means that they generate art based on text.

For example, if you want to generate art depicting cats, you can type, “A group of kittens in a basket”.

After you’ve provided a description of the image that you want to generate, the generator will use a Machine Learning algorithm to generate it.

Some generators are more complex than others—featuring parameters, values, and qualities.

Other generators can generate art based on an image.

Due to the explosive demand for these generators, they are usually not free to use.

However, most of them provide a free trial where you can generate x number of images before you have to pay.

Best AI art generators

The best AI art generators are Midjourney, DALL·E 2, and Stable Diffusion.

These generators are the gold standard in AI art generation because of their accuracy and quality.

Using a text-to-image system, they can generate art based on prompts or a description.

Midjorney and DALL·E have a free trial while Stable Diffusion is free to use

1. Midjourney

Midjourney fishes jumping out of a glass of water

I’ve personally used multiple AI art generators, and Midjourney is the best one so far.

It generates the most accurate images out of prompts and you can make variations of the generated image.

With prompts like “realistic”, “detailed”, or “unreal engine”, Midjourney is able to generate hyper-realistic art that you cannot find anywhere else.

In addition, Midjourney will never generate the same image even if you use the same prompts.

To use it, you need to join the Midjourney Discord server and use the “/imagine command” (e.g. /imagine a glass of water with fishes).

Do note that Midjourney is only free for the first 25 prompts.

After you’ve used up all 25 prompts, you need to pay to use them.

The pricing starts from $10 a month—learn more about the pricing here.

2. DALL·E 2

DALL·E 2 is developed by OpenAI, the same company that developed ChatGPT.

It’s an AI system that can generate realistic images and art from a description.

Similar to Midjourney, it can combine styles, attributes, and concepts.

For example, you can provide these prompts, “in a Vincent Van Gogh style”, “resting in space”, or “a bunch of bananas”.

In addition, it can expand images like the Mona Lisa and create new compositions out of them.

You can also use it to edit existing images, remove elements, and include textures, reflections, and shadows.

Lastly, it can take an original piece of art and make variations of it.

Here’s the prompt for the image above: Here’s the prompt for the image above: A gallon of milk, a dozen eggs, and a loaf of bread arranged on a table. Realistic oil on canvas painting.

3. Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion space art

Stable Diffusion is developed by CompVis group LMU Munich, Runway, and Stability AI.

It’s led by Robin Romach and Patrick Esser, continuing on their prior work on Latent Diffusion Models.

Similar to Midjourney and DALL·E 2, Stable Diffusion is a text-to-image system that can create art in seconds.

It can run on most GPUs and produce art at high speeds and quality.

The system is built upon the work of the CompVis and Runway team.

The Stable Diffusion demo is free to use on huggingface.co.

For faster generation and API access, you need to go to beta.dreamstudio.ai.

New users will get 100 free DreamStudio credits that you can use to generate 500 standard images.

After you’ve reached the limit, you need to buy more credits by clicking on your Profile Picture > My Account > Purchase Credits.
