How to change your MetaMask password
To change your MetaMask password, you need to open the MetaMask extension and import your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase.
By importing your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase, you get to enter a new password.
Then, you’ll be able to use your new password to log in to your MetaMask wallet.
Unfortunately, if you forgot both your MetaMask Secret Recovery Phrase and your password, you won’t be able to recover your MetaMask wallet.
However, you can try finding your vault data on your computer.
Here’s how to change your MetaMask password:
1. Import your MetaMask wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase
The first step is to import your MetaMask wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase.
When you first create a MetaMask wallet, you’ll be given a Secret Recovery Phrase.
If you’ve saved your Secret Recovery Phrase, you can use it to change your MetaMask password.
To begin with, open Chrome and click on the MetaMask extension.
After you’ve opened the MetaMask extension, you’ll see an “import using Secret Recovery Phrase” under the “Unlock” button.
Click on “import using Secret Recovery Phrase” to start recovering your MetaMask wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase.
2. Paste your Secret Recovery Phrase and choose a new password
After you’ve clicked on “import using Secret Recovery Phrase”, you’ll land on the “Restore your Account with Secret Recovery Phrase” page.
The page contains 3 fields including “Wallet Secret Recovery Phrase”, “New password”, and “Confirm password”.
Firstly, paste your Secret Recovery Phrase in the “Wallet Secret Recovery Phrase” field.
Unfortunately, if you lost your Secret Recovery Phrase, you won’t be able to change your MetaMask password.
Secondly, choose a new password and enter it in the “New password” field.
Your password needs to have a minimum of 8 characters.
Thirdly, re-enter your new password in the “Confirm password” field.
Lastly, click on “Restore” to change your MetaMask password.
Keep in mind that only the first account of your wallet will autoload.
After you’ve completed the restoration process, you can add additional accounts by clicking on the dropdown menu followed by “Create Account”.
3. You’ve successfully changed your MetaMask password
After you’ve clicked on “Restore”, your MetaMask wallet will be unlocked.
Now, your first account will be automatically loaded.
Keep in mind that if you restore your wallet using another Secret Recovery Phrase, your current wallet, accounts, and assets will be removed from the app permanently.

Now, you’ll be able to unlock your MetaMask wallet by entering your new password.
How to reset your MetaMask password
To reset your MetaMask password, you need to either recover your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase or reset your password on your wallet’s settings.
If you’ve saved your Secret Recovery Phrase, you can import it to change your MetaMask password.
To do so, open the MetaMask extension and click on “import using Secret Recovery Phrase” under the “Unlock” button.
After you’ve clicked on “import using Secret Recovery Phrase”, you’ll land on the “Restore your Account with Secret Recovery Phrase” page.
On the page, you need to paste your Secret Recovery Phrase, choose a new password, and re-enter your new password.
Lastly, click on “Restore” to reset your MetaMask password.
On the other hand, if you’re already logged into your MetaMask wallet, you can change your password in your settings.
Here’s how to change your MetaMask password in your wallet’s settings:
- Click on the menu icon followed by “Settings”.
- Click on “Security & Privacy” to go to your security and privacy settings.
- In your security and privacy settings, click on “Change password”.
- Enter your current password.
- Enter a new password in the “New Password” field.
- Re-enter your new password in the “Confirm Password” field.
- Click on “I understand…”.
- Click on “Reset Password” to reset your MetaMask password.
In some cases, you might not have the option to change your MetaMask password.
If you don’t have the “Change password” option, you can only reset your MetaMask password by importing your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase.
