Every chat can have different nicknames and anyone in the chat can see nicknames.
People you follow or give permission can edit your nickname.
This feature is new, so if you don’t have it yet, you must wait until it’s rolled out to you.

How to Fix Instagram Chat Nickname Option Not Showing
The Instagram chat nickname option is not showing because you probably have a professional account.
The nickname feature is only available for personal accounts at the moment.
Fix 1: Switch to a personal account
- Go to your Instagram profile and select the menu icon.
- Scroll down and select “Business tools and controls”.
- Select “Switch account type”.
- Select “Switch to personal account”.
Fix 2: Switch to another account
- Open Instagram and select your username at the top.
- Select another account to switch to.
- Tap on the message icon and select a chat.
- Select the user’s username.
- Check if the “Nickname” option is showing up.
Fix 3: Wait until the feature is rolled out to you
- The nickname feature is new and has not yet been rolled out globally.
- If you don’t have the feature, you must wait until it’s rolled out to you.
- If you have more than one account, you can check if your other account(s) have the feature.
