How to Remove Your Profile Picture on Facebook

If your profile picture on Facebook is old, it’s a good idea to remove or change it.

This is especially so if your profile picture is a photo of yourself.

On Facebook, removing your profile picture can be challenging.

This is because there isn’t a “delete” or a “remove” option that you can use.

If you want to remove your profile picture on Facebook, you’ll have to use another method instead.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to remove your profile picture on Facebook.

You can use both the desktop and the mobile version of Facebook for this.

How to remove your profile picture on Facebook

To remove your profile picture on Facebook, navigate to your Facebook profile first.

Once you’re on your profile, view your profile picture, tap on the three dots, and tap on “Delete Photo”.

After you’ve tapped on “Delete Photo”, your profile picture will be removed.

Your profile picture will then be set to the default profile picture of Facebook.

The default profile picture of Facebook is the white silhouette of a person with a blue background.

If you don’t want your profile picture to be the silhouette, you can change it by tapping on “select profile picture or video”.

On the other hand, if you’re okay with the silhouette being your profile picture, you don’t have to do anything else.

Below is a guide on how you can remove your profile picture on Facebook (with screenshots).

1. Navigate to your Facebook profile

Open Facebook > tap on the menu on the bottom navigation bar > tap on “See your profile”.

To begin with, open the Facebook mobile app.

You can use Facebook on a desktop for this as well.

However, the screenshots in this guide are taken on the Facebook mobile app.

Hence, the user interface will be a little different.

Once you’re on the Facebook mobile app, you’ll land on your news feed.

On the bottom navigation bar, you’ll see a menu icon.

Tap on the menu icon to go to the Facebook menu.

On the menu, you’ll see multiple options that you can navigate to.

Directly under the menu header, you’ll see your Facebook name and profile picture.

At the bottom of your name, you’ll see a “See your profile” phrase.

Tap on “See your profile” to go to your Facebook profile.

2. View your profile picture

Tap on your profile picture > tap on “View Profile Picture”.

After you’ve tapped on “See your profile”, you’ll land on your Facebook profile.

On your Facebook profile, you’ll see your Facebook profile picture and your name.

You’ll also see your cover photo.

Since you’re looking to remove your profile picture, you need to tap on your profile picture.

Tap on your profile picture to open a navigation menu.

Make sure that you tap on your profile picture and not the camera icon.

This is because tapping on the camera icon does not allow you to view your profile picture.

Once you’ve tapped on your profile picture, a navigation menu will open with four options.

The four options are “View Profile Picture”, “Select profile picture or video”, “Add Frame”, and “Create avatar profile picture”.

Tap on “View Profile Picture” to view your profile picture on Facebook.

3. Delete your profile picture

Tap on the three dots on the top navigation bar.

You might have noticed that there isn’t a delete option in the previous step.

This is because there isn’t a “delete” or a “remove” option directly on the navigation menu.

Instead, you’ll have to delete your profile picture as a post.

After you’ve tapped on “View Profile Picture”, you’ll be able to see a full-size image of your profile picture.

At the top of it, you’ll see a tag icon, a location icon, and three dots.

Tap on the three dots at the top of your profile picture.

Tap on “Delete Photo” to remove your profile picture on Facebook.

After you’ve tapped on the three dots, a navigation menu will open.

On the navigation menu, you’ll see several options.

The options include “Delete Photo”, “Make Cover Photo”, “Save Photo”, and “More”.

As you’re looking to delete your profile picture, tap on “Delete Photo”.

Once you’ve tapped on “Delete Photo”, the photo will be deleted.

In other words, your profile picture will be removed.

If you want to change your profile picture, you need to tap on your profile picture again and tap on “Select profile picture or video”.

On the other hand, if you’re just looking to remove your profile picture, you don’t have to do anything else.

You’ve successfully removed your profile picture on Facebook!

How do you have no profile picture on Facebook?

To have no profile picture on Facebook, you need to delete your existing profile picture.

Once you’ve deleted your existing profile picture, you’ll have no profile picture.

To do so, navigate to your profile > tap on your profile picture > tap on “View Profile Picture” > tap on the three dots > tap on “Delete Photo”.

Your profile picture will then be automatically set to the default profile picture on Facebook, which is a white silhouette of a person with a blue background.

How do you remove your profile picture from Facebook without deleting it?

To remove your profile picture from Facebook without deleting it, you need to set it to “Only Me”.

To do so, navigate to your profile > tap on your profile picture > View Profile Picture > tap on the three dots > Edit privacy/Edit audience > Only Me.

Once you’ve changed the privacy setting of your profile picture to “Only Me”, only you will be able to see your profile picture.

In other words, your friends and users that you’re not friends on Facebook with will not be able to see your profile picture.

Conclusion

Having an old or outdated profile picture is bad because of multiple reasons.

Firstly, if you set a profile picture of yourself that was taken years ago, your friends may not recognize you on Facebook.

Secondly, people will have a hard time finding you on Facebook.

Additionally, it shows that you’re no longer active on the platform.

Ideally, you should change your profile picture once every year.

If your profile picture has been the same for a few years, then it’s time for you to change it.

Alternatively, you can remove your current profile picture if you don’t have any recent photos of yourself using the guide above.
