How to Add a Microphone in OBS

OBS is the most popular recording and streaming software on the internet.

The best YouTubers, streamers, and podcasters use the software to create content.

It’s free to use, comes with a myriad of features, and is compatible with most devices.

I personally use OBS to stream and create YouTube content, so I have a lot of experience with it.

This includes adding and configuring scenes, sources, filters, and many more.

In this short and simple guide, you’ll learn how to add a microphone in OBS whether if it’s connected to an audio interface or not.

How to Add a Microphone in OBS

To add a microphone in OBS, you need to add an Audio Input Capture device and select your microphone or audio interface from the dropdown box.

Before that, you need to ensure that your Microphone is connected to an Audio Interface with an XLR cable.

Here’s how to add a mic in OBS:

  1. Click the “+” icon under “Scenes” to add a scene (skip this step if you’ve already added a scene).
  2. Click the “+” icon under “Sources” to add a new source.
  3. Select “Audio Input Capture” and select “Create new”.
  4. Name it anything (e.g. Audio Input Capture) and select “OK”.
  5. Select your microphone or audio interface from the dropdown box and select “OK”!

After you’ve selected your microphone or audio interface from the dropdown box, you can start testing your microphone.

To do so, hit “Record”, speak into the microphone, stop recording, and playback the video.

Tip: If you can’t hear your microphone, you need to increase its output gain on OBS.

To do so, you need to right-click “Audio Input Capture” and select “Filters”.

After you’ve selected “Filters”, click the “+” icon, select “Compressor”, and increase the output gain until you can hear yourself.
