5 Ways to Fix TikTok Crashing

Is TikTok crashing, closing, freezing, or has the app stopped working?

When you open the app for a few seconds, it might crash.

This can be caused by the latest TikTok, iOS, or Android update.

TikTok rarely goes down because it has multiple servers.

However, if the app happens to go down or crashes, there are multiple ways to fix it.

In this guide, you’ll learn why is TikTok crashing, closing, freezing, and how to fix it.

Why is TikTok crashing?

TikTok is crashing either because of the latest app, iOS, or Android update.

It can also mean that TikTok is down—you can check this on DownDetector or Twitter.

As of 15 September 2022, TikTok had a global outage.

Many users were complaining about the downtime on Twitter.

Here’s a tweet by @JessicaDeVito9, “TikTok: *goes down*, Everyone: *runs to Twitter*”.

And another one by @ChippyGuac, “Is anyone else’s TikTok crashing? Or maybe it’s cuz I updated my phone?”.

“I’ve never felt like I was an addict until I immediately opened twitter the second TikTok wasn’t working for me” by @nathot_.

“Me searching “TikTok down” on Twitter to see if the rest of the world is panicking at 2 am or if my phone is just being glitchy” by @imabrooklynbaby.

It’s not known what caused the outage, but TikTok was down for everyone.

A known cause for the downtime is the latest iOS update (iOS 15.7) that caused TikTok to crash.

How to TikTok crashing

To fix TikTok crashing, you need to first check if the app is down (use DownDetector or Twitter).

If the app is not down, you can either try clearing the app’s cache, switching your network, updating the app, or uninstalling and reinstalling it.

1. Check if TikTok is down (wait it out)

The first step is to check if TikTok is down.

There are a couple of ways to do this—going to DownDetector or Twitter.

Firstly, go to DownDetector and search for “TikTok”.

Check if there’s a spike in the number of reports on the graph.

If there is, it means that the app is experiencing an outage and you need to wait until TikTok is back up.

This will usually take a few hours and not more than 24 hours.

The second way to check if TikTok is down is to search for “TikTok down” on Twitter.

After you’ve searched for it, check the top and latest tweets to see if anyone is tweeting about it.

You can also check TikTok’s official support Twitter if they tweeted about it.

If TikTok is down, you need to be patient and wait for a few hours for the app to be back up.

2. Clear the app’s cache

How to clear TikTok’s cache for iOS devices:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select “General”.
  3. Select “iPhone Storage”.
  4. Tap on “TikTok”.
  5. Select “Offload App”.

How to clear TikTok’s cache for Android devices:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to “Apps”.
  3. Select “Instagram”.
  4. Select Storage > Clear Cache > Clear Data.

How to clear TikTok’s cache on the app:

  1. Open the TikTok app.
  2. Tap on “Profile”.
  3. Tap on the menu icon > Settings and privacy.
  4. Select “Clear cache”.

Clearing TikTok’s cache will fix certain issues on the app like crashes.

It will also free up storage used by the app.

This method is also recommended by the official TikTok Help Center.

3. Switch your network

If you’re using Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data.

On the other hand, if you’re using mobile data, switch to Wi-Fi.

You can also try switching to another Wi-Fi network if you don’t have mobile data.

If your internet speed is too slow, it might cause the app to stop working.

If you carry out too many actions on the app, your IP address may be temporarily blocked as well.

Switching your network can help to fix both issues.

You can also try installing a free VPN app and connecting to a VPN.

4. Update TikTok

The fourth method is to update TikTok to the latest version.

To do so, open the App Store or Google Play Store, search for “TikTok” and tap on “Update”.

Some updates contain bug fixes and improvements that can fix the crashing issue on TikTok.

Other updates, however, will introduce bugs and glitches to the app.

If that’s the case, TikTok will release a follow-up update to fix them.

If there isn’t an update, you need to wait for one.

5. Uninstall and reinstall TikTok

The final method is to uninstall and reinstall TikTok.

By doing this, the app will be updated to the latest version.

In addition, the app’s cache and data will be cleared.

This can fix certain issues on the app like loading, crashing, or stopping.

After you’ve reinstalled TikTok, you need to log in to your account again.
