Why does it say you’re not eligible for TikTok?

If you’ve selected a date of birth that is under the age of 13, you will not be able to create an account.

This is because TikTok is only available for people aged 13 and above.

That being said, if you were to select a date of birth under the age of 13, you’ll get the “Sorry, looks like you’re not eligible for TikTok… but thanks for checking us out!” error.

To fix the “Not Eligible” error on TikTok, you need to sign up for an account on the TikTok website.

Alternatively, you can try clearing the cache for the TikTok app or reinstalling it.

After you’ve signed up for an account on the TikTok website, open the TikTok app and log in with the account that you’ve just created.

This is because you’ve selected a date of birth that is not eligible while signing up for an account on the TikTok app and not on the website.

If you were to sign up for a new account on the TikTok website, the error message will not show up unless you’ve entered a date of birth that is not eligible once more.

Got to TikTok.com > select the “Log in” button.

Firstly, go to TikTok.com on a browser.

The reason for this is because using TikTok on a browser allows you to bypass the “Not Eligible” error as it only shows up on the app.

You can either use a desktop to visit the website or a browser on your device (e.g., Safari, Chrome).

Once you’re on the TikTok website, you’ll see a log in button on the top navigation bar.

Select “Log in” to go to the login screen.

In the next couple of steps, you’ll learn how to sign up for a new account on the TikTok website.

After you’ve selected the “Log in” button from the previous step, you’ll land on the log in page.

On the log in page, there are multiple options that you can choose from—Log in with Facebook, Google, LINE, etc.

In addition, the login screen has a link where you can sign up for a new account if you don’t have one.

Since you don’t have an account yet, you have to create one.

On the bottom of the screen, you’ll see a message that says, “Don’t have an account? Sign up”.

Select the “Sign up” link (in red) to sign up for an account.

In the next step, you’ll have to follow the on-screen instructions to sign up for an account.

Step #3: Make sure to select an eligible date of birth

Once you’re on the sign up screen, you’ll be given multiple options to sign up with—Use phone or email, Continue with Facebook, and more.

Make sure to enter a date of birth that is aged 13 and above (e.g. January 1, 2000).

After you’ve entered an eligible birthday, select “Next”.

Then, choose either your phone or email in order to verify your account.

If you’re using your phone, a code will be sent to your phone number.

Similarly, if you’re using an email, a code will be sent to your inbox.

Next, create a password that is 8 to 20 characters long and has a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters.

Then, select “Next” and complete the human verification.

Lastly, enter the verification code that is sent to your phone number/email.

Congrats, you’ve successfully created a TikTok account.

In the final step, you’ll have to open the TikTok app and log in with the new account that you’ve just created.

Step #4: Open the TikTok app and log in with your account

This time, the “Not Eligible” error will not show up and you will be able to log in to the app.

What is the eligible age for TikTok?

According to TikTok, the app is only available to people aged 13 and above.

If you’re below the age of 13, you won’t be able to create a TikTok account.

On TikTok’s Terms of Service, the phrase, “13 years old or over” has been mentioned 5 times:

Under “2. Description of the Services”, “3. Accepting the Terms”, “7. Your use of the Services”, “11. Other Terms”, and another “11. Other Terms” under “Supplemental Terms – Jurisdiction-Specific”.

Conclusion

Most apps on the app stores require their users to be aged 13 above due to their nature.

TikTok is no exception as some of its user-generated content is not suitable for children.

If you happened to enter a birthday that is under 13, you will not be able to create a TikTok account.

To recap, there are a couple of ways you can use to fix the “Not Eligible” error:

  • Signing up for an account via the TikTok website.
  • Clearing the cache on TikTok and reinstalling it.

In a nutshell, signing up for an account via the TikTok website is your best bet as it will bypass the error message.
