To delete a group chat on Messenger, you need to remove everyone in the group first.
After you’ve removed everyone in the group, you need to leave it.
By doing this, the group will be permanently deleted.
On Facebook Messenger, there is an option for you to remove group members.
If you leave the group without removing everyone, existing members will still be able to chat.
In addition, another group member has to be assigned to the administrator role.
Hence, if you want to delete a group, you need to remove everyone in the group first.
Here’s how to delete a group chat on Messenger:
- Tap on the top navigation bar of the group
- Tap on “See group members”
- Remove everyone from the group
- Leave the group
- Tap on “Leave”
1. Tap on the top navigation bar of the group
Firstly, you need to open the Facebook Messenger mobile app and log in to your account.
You can also use the Facebook Messenger desktop app for this.
For the purpose of this guide, we’ll use the mobile app instead.
Once you’re on Messenger, you need to navigate to the group that you want to delete.
Tap on the top navigation bar of the group.
Keep in mind that you can only delete a group if you’re an admin.
2. Tap on “See group members”
After you’ve tapped on the top navigation bar of the group, you’ll land on the group settings.
Now, you’ll see multiple categories including “Customization”, “Chat info”, “More actions”, and more.
Under “Chat info”, you’ll see the “See group members” option.
Before you delete the group, you need to remove everyone from it first.
Otherwise, they’ll still be able to chat in it.
To start removing group members, tap on “See group members”.
3. Remove everyone from the group
After you’ve tapped on “See group members”, you’ll land on the “Members” page.
On the page, you’ll be able to see a list of members of the group.
Now, you need to remove everyone in the group.
You can skip this step if you’re the only one who wants to leave the group.
To do so, tap on a member and select “Remove From Group”.
Unfortunately, there isn’t an option for you to remove everyone in the group at once.
Hence, you need to manually remove each group member.
4. Leave the group
After you’ve removed everyone from the group, you’ll be the only one left on the list.
Now, you need to tap on yourself.
After you’ve tapped on yourself, you’ll be given a couple of options.
This includes “View Facebook Profile” and “Leave Group”.
Tap on “Leave Group” to leave the group.
Before you leave the group, make sure there are no members left.
Otherwise, they’ll still be able to chat in the group.
5. Tap on “Leave”
After you’ve tapped on “Leave”, a pop-up message will appear.
The pop-up message says that you can choose a new admin.
Here’s the full message, “You can choose a new admin from the people listed under Members”.
Followed by, “If you leave the group without choosing a new admin, the most senior group member will become the admin”.
Since you’ve already removed all of your group members, you don’t have to set a new admin.
Tap on “Leave” to leave the group.
After you’ve tapped on “Leave”, the group will be permanently deleted and you won’t be able to see it in your chat list!
Conclusion
There isn’t an option to remove all group members on Messenger at once, so you’ll have to remove group members individually.
When you remove members in a group, they will not be able to chat in it anymore.
However, they’ll still be able to see the group in their chat list.
In addition, they’ll still be able to see the previous messages in the group.
The only thing that they can do is to delete the group from their chat list.
They can do so by navigating to the group in their chat list, swipe left on it, tapping on “More”, and tapping on “Delete”.
By doing so, the group will be permanently deleted.
